Read more about TURKEY here!

Turkish Raki is the most popular drink for Turkish Men. When one thinks of Turkey or Turks, one is reminded of Raki, the traditional Turkish drink. Raki can be made from different fruits in different regions, but raisin is the most common. The drink made in Anatolia and known as Turkish raki has a history going back 300 years. The art of distillation which started in the Arab world and spread to the neighboring countries was implemented when people thought of making use of the sugar in the residue of wine processing. With the addition of aniseed, raki took on its Turkish characteristic.

Hookah traditions in Turkey

Hookah smoking by a coffee shop in Diyarbakýr, 1909.In Turkey, hookah is smoked on a social basis, usually in one’s home with guests or in a cafe with friends. Most cities have hookah cafes where hookah is offered with a non-alcoholic drink (mainly tea). This is mostly for health reasons rather than cultural reasons. Often people will smoke hookah after dinner as a replacement for cigarettes. In bigger cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Adana, restaurants may have dinner & hookah specials which include meal, beverage (alcoholic/non-alcoholic), Turkish coffee, and hookah.

Once the centre of Istanbul’s social and political life, the hookah is considered one of life’s great pleasures by the locals today. In certain parts of the country, people use hookah cafes to watch popular TV shows, national sports games, etc. and smoke hookah to socialize.

Scandinavia is a historical and geographical region centered on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe which includes the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The other Nordic countries, Finland and Iceland (+ the Faroe Islands), are also sometimes included because of their close historic and cultural relations to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Although it depends on context which countries are considered Scandinavian, the term the NORDIC COUNTRIES is used unambiguously for Norway, Sweden, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland), Finland (including Åland) and Iceland.

EuroCircle welcomes other NORDIC/SCANDINAVIAN organizations/institutions/performers to participate this evening as co-hosts.

ROMANIAN CONNECTION:
Vampires and Vampire batsare a part of Halloween. The most popular vampire is Count Dracula. Every year, all over the world thousands and thousands of costumes and accessories personifying Dracula, or vampires, or vampire bats are sold around Halloween. In spite of their high prices, costumes of Dracula, including wigs, capes, teeth with fangs and of course the blood are very popular. And that is because Count Dracula has become a symbol of Halloween.

Transylvania , the country of Count Dracula.
Many tours include visiting Bran Castle a.k.a. Dracula’s Castle, Sighisoara Citadel, fortress of Poienari (Vlad Tepes’ Residential Castle ) – rebuilt by Vlad Dracula in 1459 with the hands of traitor boyars. Bran Castle was originally a fortress built by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in the year 1212. Vlad Tepes used Bran Castle as headquarters for his incursions into Transylvania. Over the last years, Dracula became a symbol of Romania, alongside being the symbol of Halloween.

Bulgaria remembers ancient civilisations and great people that wrote its turbulent history. Situated in Southeastern Europe, Bulgaria occupies the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula.

Bulgaria blends in itself the remarkable beauty of the azure, warm turquoise sea and the majestic, snow-topped mountains. The homeland of the Europe’s most ancient civilization and the oldest gold in the world, Bulgaria will enchant you with the wealth of colors throughout its four seasons, with the golden shade of its fine sea sands and heavy wheat fields, with the crimson color of Bulgarian roses and wine.
