Meet Ben Rosenfeld – Russian Comedian and Author

Meet Ben Rosenfeld a New York City Based Stand Up Comedian and Book Author who performs all over Manhattan. His next show is this week!

Please introduce yourself (name, country, where are you from and what do you do, where do you live, what did you study and why, family etc – the usual stuff)?

My name is Ben Rosenfeld. I was born in Leningrad, USSR (aka St. Petersburg, Russia). I’m a stand up comedian and book author based out of New York City. In college (Rutgers University) I double majored in Economics and Philosophy, so I know how to make money, I just don’t see the point. Then in grad school (Caltech) I took a class in decision theory, which made me decide to quit grad school. I’m an only child of Russian-Jewish immigrants. I grew up in a frozen tundra, untouched by human kindness… Connecticut.

How did you end up in New York of all places?

I wound up in New York because I hate driving cars and most of my life has been spent within 100 miles of NYC. It also happens to be the best place to do comedy.

What is the best and worst about New York for you…what is a typical day and weekend?
Best part of NYC is not driving all the time and worrying about parking, and that the city feels alive and energetic at all hours. Worst part is the city feels alive and energetic at all hours so it’s hard to relax. And waiting for subways at 2am is annoying. And NYC is super expensive. Typical day – wake up at 9 or 10am, do emails, review my performances from last night, write, edit videos. Around 5pm go and do comedy shows and network. Home around 1am. Sleep by 2am. This is pretty much the same on a weekday and a weekend, only difference being there’s more shows to do on weekends and they go a little later.

How do you find the lifestyle in New York compared to your hometown in Leningrad (housing, food, health care, education, nature, weather?

I grew up in Stamford, CT, which is less than an hour away from NYC, so it’s pretty similar. You just pay more in rent for a smaller space, and there’s way more pedestrian traffic. Compared to Russia, NYC is warmer weather and you’re more likely to get mugged than get your organs stolen 🙂

How do you make your living now – and how would you like to develop that career?

I make my living performing comedy and doing comedy related activities like acting, voice overs, video editing, directing, writing and designing websites for other performers. I want more writing and performing, and less of everything else. TV work would be nice.

Do you see the differences between nationalities  easily – yours vs. Americans vs. other Europeans?

Yes. Russians are more pessimistic / realistic and straight forward. Americans are more cheery and obsessed about happiness. Europeans – from when I’ve traveled – people in southern Europe (Italy, Greece, etc.) are very warm and friendly to strangers and each other, northern Europe (UK / Ireland) not as much.

What is the essence of New York to you?

NYC = energy + achievement.

What do you absolutely miss from your country/elsewhere heritage (food, culture, movies etc) … or elsewhere?

Banyas and cheap caviar.

Workwise – how do you see you’re being different from your countrymen– also culturally, what stands out in your chosen profession?

There’s way more people in America trying to be comedians than there are in Russia.

When you think about what did you think about life in New York before you moved there – did you misconceptions that turned out to be wrong?

I’ve been around NYC since I was ten years old, so this doesn’t really apply.

Knowing more about life and having lived with your decisions for a while (like work) – would you still choose to be there and why? Why not.?

Yes – unless Los Angeles offers me a pile of money to work on a show there.

What should everyone know and understand about your country and its culture?

New Yorkers are callus and indifferent on the outside, but really nice and kindhearted once we’re certain you’re not trying to screw us somehow.

What cafes or restaurants do you recommend to tourists to go to in New York  and why? Or to do something else.

Shake shack, Rice To Riches, any good Thai and Indian restaurant.

What would be your ideal life – with no monetary issues to make it happen?

If monetary issues weren’t a thing, I’m already living my ideal life style.

Would you move back to your country full time – yes or no (why and why not)?

No – while I speak fluent Russian, I have a terrible accent that natives notice right away, and my reading/writing skills leave a lot to be desired. Plus I barely tolerate NYC winters, I have no chance in Russia!

What has been the worst social/cultural issue to deal with in New York  for you?

When you first move to NYC and don’t know many people, you feel much lonelier than anywhere else, just because there’s this sea of humanity everywhere, and it’s all anonymous.

Anything else you would like sharing with us?

I’m recording my second comedy album this Thursday, September 24th LIVE in New York City during 2 shows. 7pm and 9:15pm.  BUY 7:00 PM SHOW Tix   OR    BUY 9:15 PM SHOW Tix  (discount gets applied after you hit proceed to checkout).

Nadia Storm in New York: Danish Scientist Who Lives to Work, Not Works to Live

It is so great to run into people who really LOVE what they do for living. Nadia is going to tell in her own words about her life, work and expat experience in NYC (and elsewhere). Keep reading…

WHO IS NADIA
My name is Nadia Storm, I’m from Denmark and currently I live in New York.

I was born in South Korea and adopted to Denmark, where I grew up with my Danish family. I graduated from high school in 2003; I spent the following 2 years working and travelling in my “home” country, experiencing the life in South Korea. I attended University of Southern Denmark in 2005 and chose to study Molecular Biomedicine. I’ve always been interested in how the body works, and often asked questions like, why are we different, why are some people sick and some not, and why is it (still) impossible to treat diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s etc.

TRAVELLING & LIFE AS AN EXPAT
Travelling has always been a huge priority in my life, and something that I really enjoy – so when I had the opportunity to do a part of my Master’s degree abroad, I chose to move to San Diego (California) to work at Sandford Burnham Medical Research Institute, while finishing up my Master’s degree. At the end of 2010 I went back to Odense to defend my Master thesis, and one month later I continued to Germany to initiate a PhD at Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing and age-related diseases. I chose this institute because of they offered me a great research project, huge scientific freedom and a professional and awesome environment. The professor for which I was working for has a great name in Ageing research, and I had met him a couple of times while I was in San Diego. 3 and a half amazing years passed by so fast, and it was absolutely incredible! Cologne is a wonderful city, the institute is growing and the science is absolutely international high-class science! I was lucky during my time there, and my result were published in one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the World, so doors were open in all directions.

In January 2014, I interviewed at six different institutions in the USA; I wanted to go back to the USA to precede my career as a scientific researcher. In February I handed in my Doctor Dissertation and in April I was awarded with a German Doctor’s degree – with outstanding remarks. In August I left Germany and October 1st 2014, I began a new life as scientist at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York.

WHY NEW YORK?
I chose New York because of the laboratory, the professor and the science – outstanding and very acknowledged in the field of ageing and age-related diseases, with a special focus on a specific cellular pathway that has been found to be very involved in biological ageing, and therefore also in diseases that are related to aged organisms.

I love New York because of all the opportunities here, and because it’s never boring. There’s always something to do, and there’s always something going on. Typically, however, I work a lot – so I don’t have too much time to enjoy the city. But when time allows, there’s always something up! And right now, it’s amazing that I can go to the beach on the weekends – feels like a small vacation every weekend!

New York is very different from Denmark – and from Germany. Everything is super expensive and the city is pretty chaotic and always busy! The Danish health care system seems like something coming from a different planet (I guess it actually almost does) and most nature is “fake”. But let’s just face it – New York is, despite the thousands of tourists, humidity close to 100%, bad public transportation and super expensive life style, absolutely amazing! There’s just something over the city! It’s great! I love it here!

THE RESEARCH COMMUNITY & WORK
The research community is also really really strong here – there are so many great schools and institutions gathered in a pretty small area, which increases the level as it attracts many scientists from all over the World. In my current laboratory, the level is super high, and people are working crazy hours – but they love it. We live to work – not work to live, which is something many of my Danish friends and family have a hard time understanding sometimes. I love my job and what I do, because it challenges me every day and because I get to do something. I’m part of developing, moving things forward and discovering. I’m very curious, and I always have a lot of questions – doing research I can ask some of these, and try to answer them myself. It’s simple – I’m just a nerd!!

ABOUT DENMARK
While being away from Denmark, I’ve realized how civilized and lucky we are in Denmark – and how happy we should be that we’ve a strong wellfare system, and that everybody has equal opportunities from the beginning. Everybody can go to the doctor, everybody can go to school (even higher educations) and you’ll get help if you lose your job, if you’re sick or if you get pregnant. Danish people, including my self, are spoiled and used to a high degree of service and a country that works – that’s something that you learn to appreciate more when you see other countries where it doesn’t work, and where there’s no help or support from the government.

I would like, if possible, to return to Denmark (or at least to Europe) at some point – but for now, I’m very happy where I am. I miss my friends and family from Denmark – and some special Danish bread, but other than that, there are so many other delicious and awesome things that perfectly substitute the things that I used to do and the things that I used to eat in Denmark.

I would lie, though, if I didn’t say that I miss Danish candy, Leverpostej, italiensk salat, Koldskaal, Karbonader and some other Danish food-things.

Mina Deutsch – Owner of Mina D Jewelry

Meet Mina Deutsch, an amazing jewelry designer featured in publications such as Social Life Magazine, Resident Magazine and has been working in the diamond business for over 20 years.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Mina Deutsch. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I grew up with my brother , my parents and maternal grandparents in Brooklyn. We always were and are a very close knit family with strong family ties. My parents are eastern European. Romanian, Hungarian and German. I am currently residing in NYC.

Can you tell us more about how you got started in the jewelry business?

In the fall after I had graduated high school I met Mr. Perla, the uncle of a close friend. He is the owner of Olympic Diamond, he interviewed and hired me at the same moment , and so began my career in the famed Diamond District of NYC.

My duties in the company began as administrative assistant. As I and the company grew my responsibilities and duties increased. I am currently the Finance Director for the company and have gotten to work with various upscale clients worldwide. And also travel for the company including Hong Kong frequently where we have an office.

How did Mina D Jewelry start?

Mina D Jewelry was created out of a passion for creativity, even though designing jewelry seemed as a natural process after being in the diamond and jewelry industry for a number of years. Designing jewelry was a form of expression a way to add something special to my wardrobe, something unique and unavailable in a retail outlet.

What is your favorite collection and why?

My favorite collection is the Ocean Dreams collection. Each collection includes necklaces, bracelets and earrings and are based on color not season. The Ocean Dreams collection is the collection based on the blue tones and hues of the seas and waters. As a child I spent many summers in Miami Beach and always love the colors and tranquility of water and water hues.

Have you always lived and worked in New York City?

As a descendant of Eastern European parents culture and tradition was always important. Whether its seeing a Broadway show, visiting a museum or trying a new restaurant. Living in NYC always has a lot to offer . You never know when you will hear a familiar language and strike up a conversation with a tourist from my parents country.

How do you find the lifestyle in New York compared to your hometown? (housing, food, health care, education.)?

NYC is great for so many reasons, you can walk just about anywhere and there are so many bars, restaurants open at all hours. You can find almost every culture and every type of food, Italian, French, Japanese some of my favorites.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

A typical NYC day is always so rushed and busy, weekends are my time to relax, unwind, read a good book and catch up with friends and family.

How long have you been a member of Eurocircle?

Being a member of Euro circle since April 2014 has been a great experience, it lets me meet new and interesting people. Euro circle brings together a great group of people with diverse back grounds.
