Austin – Dec 10 2016

HOLIDAY PARTY IN STYLE @ NIGHTCAP

NIGHTCAP is an elegant restaurant with a rich menu.  Thanks to Romana and Florian Prelogs (#FullFridge) we found them. Their ingredients are fresh and the wine list is always changing. The owner Christin is a charming young lady with a passion for her business. You can tell she really cares what her customers think – and that’s what it is all about.

Nightcap started a few months ago as a dessert bar  and it is is housed in a converted home in the trendy Clarksville neighborhood. Its low lighting sets the mood for a romantic rendezvous. However, the menu has been extended to include some savory items from burgers to Atlantic salmon.  For a quick snack I’d try their homemade pretzel..to die for!  MENU

EXTENDED HAPPY HOUR UNTIL 8 pm.

( featured red, white and bubbles at $6/glass as well as discounted cocktails from their cocktail menu, which are $7 each)
Christin is also offering a complimentary spread for our early guests to nibble on.

If you’d like to test their culinary skills make a reservation at 6 pm (mention EuroCircle) before the main party starts at 7 pm.  Let us make this clear – Dinner here is totally worth your time.
(512) 628-0144 – make a reservation and let them know it is for the EuroCircle party (we want to be seated together)
More details to come such as some extended happy hour pricing in the works for drinks…

Valet Parking available.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The Fin_between exhibition at Arena1 (Los Angeles, USA) engages the distinctive spirit of doing and experiencing art from Finland. The artist’s work can be seen from political in global perspectives and as an artistic discourse to which Finnish artists share a very unique angle. Located in between the west and the east, on the edge of the Europe and next to Russia, Finnish people are often reminded “you have already won the lottery as you were born Finnish”. The American dream seems not so far away? But being Finnish has multiple facets. The top education state and an obsession towards winter sports, as well as high-tech brands companies such as Nokia and Supercell hover over our heads.

How many Finnish contemporary artists or their work do Americans recognize? One of the roles of artists in Finland is to challenge the stereotypical ways of approaching nationality, things which are connected to what being a Finn means. A vital aspect of an artist in a globalized world is to challenge political structures. Art is an in-between state where the artist’s personal beliefs evoke a conversation with the world.

In the Fin_between exhibition Heini Aho will be presenting a new installation work where corner shaped artworks from Finland are connected into American objects. Jan-Erik Andersson and Shawn Decker have created a sound installation Apple Concert. The duo will also prepare a performance, taking place during the opening. Juha Allan Ekholm has been documenting Finnish workers who have been fired from their jobs in tech-related companies. Toni Hautamäki will be implementing his works, which follow the legacy of hard-edge constructivism directly to the gallery walls. Sirkku Ketola‘s work consists of a large-scale installation including hand-made prints and a video work, which takes us on a trip from a Finnish outhouse to our national landscape. Intervention-artist Per Sonne is currently on a trip: begging for money in the streets and shopping centers of Turku, Finland towards raising funds for the destination of Los Angeles, with Sunset Boulevard and Venice Beach. Antti Oksanen and Maria West have made a new video production for the exhibition which, according to them, reflects upon the meaning of locality for artists in contemporary art and a global, transnational world penetrated by virtual networks.

As artist and curator, Ville Laaksonen, not only developed the concept for the exhibition, he helped realized the collaborative works that will be on display in the Fin_between exhibition.

All the artists are members of Artists’ Association Arte, which runs the Titanik gallery in the city of Turku.

Titanik has been active since 1960, and it parent organization Arte is known for its keen interest in how art and artists can shape the use of spaces, both through temporary interventions, and by actively repurposing unwanted structures. The Fin_between group exhibition aims to promote Finnish artists internationally by collaborating with other organizations on a global scale. The project at Arena1 is a collaboration with two Los Angeles based curators, Kio Griffith and Ichiro Irie from QiPO.

The Fin_between exhibition is the counterpart for the QiPO’s Lazy Susan exhibition, which opened at Titanik in June 2016.

QiPO’s representatives have planned a series of artist and curator meetings, through which artists are able to network directly in the Los Angeles art scene. While visiting Finland, the curators met approximately 30 artists and a number of staff from local art organizations, including Kiasma, the national museum for contemporary art in Finland.

The exhibition is supported by Artists’ Association Arte and QiPO and financially supported by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Austin – Nov 18 2016

Some of you may have noticed that a Belgian Beer Bar had come alive in Downtown Austin.
The name Mort Subite translates to “sudden death” in French. Their aim of the space is to “make you feel like you’re in Belgium.

Mort will offer sabering of bottles of Deus beer, then served in champagne glasses for special occasions, .
Mort Subite patrons will also be able to partake in Belgian imports, with 24 on tap, and an additional 40 to 50 bottles.
Their emphasis is on Belgian and European liqueurs like genevers. A few local beers will pop up too.

Looks like Mort Subite — which is named after a bar and restaurant in Brussels — primarily serves Trappist beers, lambics and other Belgian-made brews in the appropriate glassware for each style.

Houston – Nov 13 2016

Join us for an architecture walk offered by Preservation Houston this Sunday. If you are interested and would like to attend the walk, please plan to arrive a few minutes prior to 1:30pm to purchase your tickets. The walking tours are typically an hour and a half. The first group tour will start shortly after 1:30pm and typically the last walking tour starts about 30 minutes after the first so if you cannot make it at 1:30pm you can catch one of the later tours.

Preservation Houston cannot guarantee EuroCircle members will be in the same walking group but message me if you plan to attend or when you have arrived.

Below is information about the walk this Sunday (from Preservation Houston’s website):
Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston was teeming with activity at the turn of the 20th century, from the wharves of the Port of Houston at Allen’s Landing to the produce wholesalers, warehouses, breweries and factories that lined its banks. Our 90-minute docent-guided walking tour looks at the bayou’s crucial role in Houston’s development and explores the remnants of some of the old development nearby, including what’s left of the Houston Ice & Brewing Company, a major industrial concern in the early 1900s.

The tour also includes stories about the city’s little-known role in the Civil War and tales of Vinegar Hill, the area’s notorious slum.

Please note that this is an exterior tour only. The tour will not go inside any buildings.
Tickets

Tickets will go on sale at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Allen’s Landing Park, 1005 Commerce Avenue. Admission is $10 for the general public ($7 for Preservation Houston members and students with valid ID). Those who walk, ride a bike or use public transit to get to the tour will receive a $2 discount. Children 11 years old and under are admitted free. Tickets may be charged to Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. The last tour group will leave just after 2 p.m. Advance reservations are not required for this tour.

Parking

Street parking is free downtown Sundays; please remember to observe posted parking regulations. Paid parking is also available in nearby parking lots. The tour start point is a short walk from the Preston station on MetroRail’s Red Line.

If inclement weather threatens on the day of the tour, watch this page for up-to-the-minute updates of any tour changes. You can also follow Preservation Houston on Twitter to receive tour updates.

A Blue Mountains tour including short hike

Your informative and knowledgeable guide will collect you from your Sydney hotel as we commence our small group deluxe tour into the heart of the unique Blue Mountains World Heritage Region. The Blue Mountains National Park is one of seven national parks that make up the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This wonderland of sandstone outcrops, deep ravines and hazy blue eucalypt forests boasts luxury retreats and the world’s steepest railway. Today your guide will take you off the beaten track to visit remote lookout locations and discuss the history, flora and fauna of this magnificent region.

Our first stop this morning is at Featherdale Wildlife Park where we arrive before any other tourists to meet the native Australian animals here – guests can actually get up close and personal, stroke a koala and hand feed kangaroos, wallabies & emus, a great experience.

Departing from Featherdale, we commence our drive to the Blue Mountains via the highway. We will travel through the picturesque village of Wentworth Falls, home to a good collection of Victorian and other historic buildings and onto the Wentworth Falls Lookout. With spectacular views over the Jamison Valley and the magnificent waterfall for which it is named, this beautiful lookout is our first stop. Here we enjoy a leisurely 30 minute round trip walk to see the Waterfalls.

Continuing on we arrive at Eaglehawk Lookout, a remote lookout point away from the crowds for views of the famous 3 Sisters. Whilst the Blue Mountains features so much more than this natural attraction you can’t help but admire the unquestionable beauty of this amazing rock formation. The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and throughout the seasons as the sunlight brings out the magnificent colours. Here your guide will discuss the legends behind this famous rock formation and time available for you to take some great photo’s.

Travelling around the mountains, we arrive at Evans Lookout where you will be issued your lunch pack and instructions on the hiking track.

This is without doubt one of the most scenic hikes available in the mountains taking you across a number of valleys and ridges as you hike from Evans Lookout to Govetts Leap all the while looking out across Australia’s Grand Canyon, The Grose Valley. Once you clap your eyes on the view from many points along this track, you will know why it’s one of the most famous lookouts in Australia. The magnificent waterfalls drop a whopping 180m to the base of the cliff. If you are not mesmerised by the dancing waves of water spray, you will be transfixed by the sweeping views down the valley to the Grose Wilderness.

The last stop is at the delightful Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens where we stop to enjoy the sweeping views across to Sydney before travelling down the Bells Line of Road to arrive back at your hotel approximately 4.30 – 5.00pm.

San Francisco – Nov 17 2016

This fun jazzy evening  -with a touch of luxury – will be held at the lovely Muka Bar.
A nice happening spot where the intelligent free thinkers sipping coffee meet the noveau rich wine drinking Apple pad tinkering elite where they will have the fun funky jazz in common as a bridge over talkative waters.  Let’s help build this musical bridge and support our fellow European from Italy who has mastered the funk with an Italian splendor. The show will commence at 8PM however we will meet before to catch up on good times and it will be a good opportunity to meet our neighbors from Europe.

NO COVERThis event is hosted by the lovely and talented Elisa Rossi, Rossi & Rei and Marc DeJong (The Netherlands)

To find out more about the Band and the Musical Talent please read below:

About the band Sonamo’ – Italian Funk
Sonamo’ meaning comes from a dialect word from Napoli (ITALY) which literally means “play now!” but it’s actually slang for “show me what you got [in a provocative way]”.
We dare to change your perception of Italian music by blending funk, jazz, and rock with a Latin twist while keeping the Italian roots at the backbone. As a matter of fact, Sonamo’ performs tunes that have roots in the deepest Italian tradition with African, Hispanic and Middle Eastern influence, since the Italian territory has been colonized by many different cultures throughout the history.
Our shows are engaging and full of energy. The musicians are extremely talented and the exciting vibe is contagious and sometimes mesmerizing but easy to listen, in a nutshell, you can dance it or listen to it, you’ll have a blast either way. You have to experience it first-hand to believe.

Giuseppe Pinto – Keyboard and vocals
